Work-From-Home Tailored Apartments Coming to Chicago’s Uptown
A new apartment building is under construction in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood. It’s bringing 200 sorely-needed new luxury apartments to the Northside neighborhood, and is delivering an extra-cool amenity that’s tailor-made for the post-Covid world.
The building is designed especially for renters who work from home. Each residential floor (yes, every single one!) will have individual office spaces that tenants can reserve. How cool is that?! It’s an impressive amenity that I’ve yet to see in any other new apartment building designs.
Located on the corner of Broadway and Wilson – at 4601 N. Broadway – this new mid-rise is also implementing public health innovations, including mobile-device controlled entry points and a touchless elevator system. It’s inspiring to see so many of Chicago’s leading developers inventing new tech-savvy features that put the health of their residents first.
A Well-Known Developer and Design Team
Developed by The John Buck Company and Free Market Ventures, this bright new building will give a sprightly update to the corner of Broadway and Wilson. The building that stood on the lot since the 1970s was most recently home to City Sports, which relocated one block south, next to the Aldi grocery store. The building has already been demolished, making way for something fresh and new.
The John Buck Company is no stranger to downtown Chicago. A real estate company with investment, property management and development divisions, they’ve been in business for 20 years. Best known for transforming Wacker Drive and River North with commercial and residential developments, their luxury apartment work includes 3Eleven, MILA Chicago and Porte Chicago.
The extraordinary Chicago architects Pappageorge Haymes Partners designed this development. The firm’s extensive and diverse portfolio features dozens of luxury apartment buildings throughout the city. They include Wolf Point East and NEXT high-rises, as well as Coeval and Luxe on Madison mid-rises.
New Apartment Design Details
So what’s the new building going to look like? I can tell you, it’s going to be a stunner, and will fit right into the Uptown neighborhood vibe.
A future home to retail, the ground level exterior has white cast stone on the front elevation. Around to the backside, there’s a charcoal brick wall with a huge area designated for a colorful mural. For the residential floors, the facade features creamy tan brick walls, stone cornice embellishments, and large sunny windows.
This nine-story mid-rise will have 12,000 square-feet of retail space on the ground-floor, and resident amenity spaces. The units will be a good mix of studios, one, two and three-bedroom apartments, making it easy to find a work-from-home apartment that suits your needs.
In addition to the work-at-home spaces on each resident floor, there will also be a robust coworking center on the ninth floor. Other amenities include a fitness center, game room and dog wash station. And of course, every luxury apartment in Chicago needs an awesome outdoor space. I see plans for a resident lounge adjacent to an expansive outdoor lounge with grills and fireplaces.
I don’t see specific details for the apartment units yet, but expect they will be on par with other luxury apartments by these developers. That means hardwood floors, modern kitchen appliances, sleek counters, and in-unit washer and dryer will likely be standard.
Getting Around Town
Even though the apartments at 4601 N. Broadway are geared towards work-from-home renters, they’re also conveniently located for commuters. There are plenty of close public transit options, with CTA Red/Purple Lines just one block away at the Wilson station. Bus stops are within a few minutes walk along the major arteries of Sheridan, Wilson and Broadway.
The plans show parking spaces for 22 cars on-site and a bicycle storage room with 178 stalls. Just to the west of the property is quick access to Lake Shore Drive and the Lakefront Trail bike path.
Chicago’s Uptown Neighborhood Features
The Uptown neighborhood is home to several historic entertainment venues and fantastic international cuisine. To the north, snap along to jazz at the century-old Green Mill or check out modern hitmakers in the legendary Aragon Ballroom. Prohibition-era secret tunnels connect the two venues where 1920s mobsters would hang out…and hide out.
The West Argyle Street Historic District – also known as Little Saigon – offers an abundance of authentic Vietnamese, Chinese and other Asian shops, culture and restaurants. Closer to Broadway and Wilson, you’ll also find several Ethiopian restaurants too!
Uptown is also home to healthcare and education centers, such as Weiss Memorial Hospital and Truman College, making these new apartments a convenient place to live for the local neighborhood workforce.
And, we can’t forget about the space to play. Montrose Avenue Beach is within walking distance, giving you access to Chicago’s largest beach without even hopping on a city bus. Swim, kayak, and catch some rays at this awesome urban oasis.
Renters with dogs will love living in these apartments too. Not only will it have amenities geared toward dog owners, but Montrose also has a Dog Beach just for pooches. If you’re looking for a dog-friendly apartment building in the Uptown neighborhood, this is it!
